New York City as Dick sees it some 30 years on from his first color shots Traveling as an outsider from Minnesota has been a revelation as the city seems to have a completely different dynamic

Dick visited Cuba in January 2013 for a workshop with Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb  

Over a period of nearly ten years Dick explored the streets of New York with a Leica and a light meter.  Those were the days when a single 35 millimeter lens was the tool of choice.  Exploring from a base in Brooklyn he captured numerous events such as the Gay Pride Parades and the Bicentennial of the United States celebrated in New York City.

Dick Ott shot color on the streets of New York City when it was not fashionable to do so. He worked at the same time as Joel Meyerowitz. His work was shown in 1987 at the Film in th Cities Gallery with that of Tom Arndt and Bruce Gilden, two well known street shooters.  He continues to shoot in New York whenever he can.

Between 1975 and 1977 Dick spent almost two years doing social anthropology amongst the Tugen of Baringo District, Kenya

Dick was adopted by the Tugen people and performed a number of ceremonies whilst living with them

In addition he also shot color and black and white images of the people and their social interaction.

Dick has spent more than thirty years shooting in Minnesota.  He started shooting in black and white and then moved to color. Between a 1981 photo workshop with Gary Winogrand and 1990 he could be found at virtually every event in the Twin Cities.

Dick has shot sports at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs and all over the Twin Cities.  He shoots hockey,soccer, baseball,volleyball, softball and lacrosse.  In addition he has shot for the Special Olympics.
